Description
Publisher, journalist and theatre critic Katherine Brisbane edited the Currency Modern Drama Series.
The plays chosen for Plays of the 60’s Volume 1 are: Oriel Gray’s Burst of Summer, Jack McKinney’s The Well, Patrick White’s The Season at Sarsaparilla and Theodore Patrikareas’ The Promised Woman.
In Oriel Gray’s study of race relations in a country town we see the culmination of thirty years of socialist theatre’s documentation of social issues. McKinney’s country comedy testifies to the impending end of the cultural isolation of rural life. Patrikareas’ play depicts the new world of the post war immigrant while White’s radical ‘charade of suburbia’ offers a eulogy to the inarticulate Australian voice… beginning an elevation which, by the end of the decade had achieved heights of poetry and satire not attempted before in Australian History.
